AI in general and ChatGPT specifically are revolutionizing the way we do business. And when it comes to job searching, the impact is no less. The countless hours spent improving your CV, adapting it to every job offer, and preparing for interviews can become much easier if we know how to leverage ChatGPT for success.

We talked about it with Esade alumnus Malcolm Welchota, co-founder of coatingAI, an AI-based automation company for the coding industry. Most of all, he’s a ChatGPT evangelist.

Here we offer a brief version of the interview:

What’s ChatGPT and why do you think it's so important?

It is essentially a language prediction model. It predicts the next word in a sequence. However, it is amazing because if you can predict language, you can predict music, you can predict paintings, you can even predict DNA. All of these things are nothing more than an association of language.

In which areas of job search can ChatGPT be the most useful?

For instance, when switching to another industry. There's an element of self-discovery which can be difficult for humans. Why not ask ChatGPT? Upload your CV and have a conversation to provide context. Based on your skills and previous experiences, ask for job suggestions that you could apply for.

And what else?

Another aspect is execution. Take the 15 jobs that you want to apply for and ask for values and behaviors associated with each one. Then, ask for an overlap score based on your CV, and you’ll receive some with a score of 80% or higher. Ask for help in adjusting your CV based on the job and in writing a cover letter. But make sure not to send it without reviewing.

What are your tips for effective prompting?

After your first prompt, you can prompt back, asking, “What else have I missed? What additional questions should I ask?” You might have no idea about these new jobs, but this will open up new perspectives.

The second tip is to verify if the information is accurate due to the problem of hallucination. To do this effectively, you should open a new chat. By doing this, you're eliminating the possibility of hallucination because it's a new instance.

The last tip is to use different generative AI tools. You might take an input from ChatGPT and paste it into Bard, and then do the same from Bard to Perplexity. This adds more depth to the answer.

If everybody uses ChatGPT, how can I still differentiate myself?

If everyone can write, why isn't everyone a Dostoyevsky? It's your ingenuity and how you apply it that will yield better results.

How can I make prompts more effective?

Avoid using a repository of prompts, as it can be limiting. The most natural way is to communicate with ChatGPT as if in a conversation. Ask it to role-play as a certain person. However, don’t just say, “act like a recruiter”. Instead, say, “act like the toughest recruiter at Amazon and ask me questions about the company”.

As a career consultant myself, will ChatGPT take my job?

It's two sided. The simple answer is that ChatGPT will not take your job. But a person using ChatGPT typically will.
